Morris Minor Hurry-up!

Post by Steve Appleton »

Hurry up, Mum!! Climb in, quick! You know these things were always dead slow and we gotta pose at the next level crossing before the train gets there." Pictured from the train and parked at the Cullinan level-crossing for a posed shoot, this black Morris Minor was seen at several more crossings down the line to Rayton. The secret to getting to those crossings before the train lay not so much in the (lack of) speed and power coming out of that old 1000 cc engine, but more in getting mum on board as quickly as possible! Nearly 40 years ago I was with a couple of mates in a Morris Minor on the narrow winding back roads of Suffolk. We got stuck behind a huge sleek powerful American gas-guzzling car with fins on the back from one of the US Air Force bases which used to proliferate there. Every time we hit a straight stretch of road, he went racing away from us. Every time we reached a bend, we caught up with him as he had to slow almost to walking pace to manoeuvre his huge transatlantic machine round ye quaint olde English blind corners. The old 1,000 cc engine proved adequate!
