I travelled on the metro system in Sydney, and also in Perth, during my two visits to Australia. A pleasant experience.

Pleasant, but not as interesting (exciting) as your own system

Nice and clean - is everyone strict on litter?

Don't be fooled, all the rubbish is in the trains.
All stations have bins, which are emptied by station staff. Downtown stations and major stations had there bins removed (terrorism). To combat this CityRail employs roving teams of cleaners.

London has the same problem - no rubbush bins on major railway stations. They were removed in the 1970s due to IRA activity and I supect nobody remembered to put them back. I think somewhere they developed fairly strong bins which channel the blast safely upwards instead of shattering. Some places also just use transparent bin bags suspended in a frame, so that the contents can easily be seen. But generally if you're on the London rail system, under- or overground, there's nowhere to dump your rubbish. With the big increase in fast food and fancy coffee outlets on stations, it makes for a mess.

In 2005 tubes were not too bad - they had lots of roving dust"persons".....
