What is interesting is the wierd coupling arrangement mounted on the front of the loco. Presumably an adapter that can be swung into place over the normal coupling hook to couple the Scharfenberg couplers on the Pendolino.

That's correct. I believe the loco is a class 57 and has been adapted as a "Thunderbird" (named after the old TV series) to rescue failed trains.
