This pic of NGG16 nr 138 at Paddock in 1981 by new forum member, Henry Gunston. This loco is now an oil-burner on the Welsh Highland Railway, although I was told in October 2007 that, due to the high cost of oil, it was planned for it to be re-converted to coal-firing.
Henry writes:
I had an excellent trip from Port Shepstone to Izingolweni and back on freight trains behind Garratts in 1981, and I attach a view of 138 at Paddock on the return trip. Despite having various shots of East African Garratts, I selected this one of 138 at Paddock to provide the "wallpaper" backdrop on my PC screen!
I have since ridden on the footplate of 138 on the Welsh Highland Railway - although the "atmosphere" was not the same as on the Alfred County.
