South African Steam in 1972.

Hello.

I visited South Africa on a three week trip in 1972 and, although I wanted to go back, I was never able to do so. However, I still have all the pictures that I took during that once-in-a-lifetime holiday and many of these are now available for all to see thanks to the wonder that is the Internet.

So, if anybody is interested to see them, here are the links :

Transvaal, Swaziland, Mozambique and Natal : http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/c1132432.html

Natal, continued, and the Eastern Cape : http://ronfisher.fotopic.net/c1306177.html

There are still lots more awaiting scanning, so I hope that they are of interest.

Best wishes from England,

Ron Fisher.

Welcome to the forum, Ron, and thanks for these great (and, for many, nostalgic) photos in your first post.

I love some of those pics, those are images from when I was young and we will never see the likes of them again. I look forward to more SAR material

Ron:
Wow, pretty incredible stuff, and about as rare as they come (eg: I don't think I've ever seen a pic of a GO on the Umtata line).

Like you say, the magic of the Internet. Keep up the good work; thanks for sharing.

The Capital Park stuff is very nostalgic. I was already taking photos there myself, at that time and can still picture the scenes in this collection as if it was this morning. Some locations will be very familiar to FOTR chaps!

I have just added a further selection of pictures from 1972 to my Fotopic site. These are at Uitenhage, Sydenham and De Aar. Here's the link :

This is the 'Stop Press!' collection where all new pictures go to start off with. In due course I shall move them on and you will then find them here in the 'South Africa - Part 2' collection :

More pictures still to come, so watch this space!

As is usual, a wonderful collection from you Ron, I wonder though when you took those photographs back in 1972, did you ever dream that not only would so many South African locomotives return to the UK to museums in the future, but that you would be able to photograph NGG 16s on regular service trains on the WHR in Wales in the 21st century.
Cheers Bernard.

Not only did I not expect to see ex SAR Garratts in North Wales, I didn't expect the photographs to be seen by people all round the world, either!
