Appeal to save historic Steam Tug
Posted: 05 Jul 2010, 23:03
The sands of time are fast running out to save South Africa's only steam tug that is capable of being restored. The Alwyn Vintcent has been a long time resident of the V&A Waterfront Marina and has changed hands several times, but with little success. She was purchased by Australian interests in 2008 and cosmetically restored, but due to unforseen circumstances has been left to rot. There was a local initiative to purchase her, but this too has fallen through. Her next stop could well be for scrap!
Although in a poor state she is restorable and her engine room is complete.
If there is anyone who can assist in saving this ship or knows of anyone who could be of assistance then please email me at knottsfam@mweb.co.za
The main objective is to preserve this last coal fired tug and retain her in South Africa.
