A1 60163 Tornado back together again after repairs

Post by Steve Appleton »

Posted for David Rodgers (pictures copyright David Rodgers):
After its well publicised boiler problems (which was returned for repairs to Meiningen in Germany), A1 No. 60163 Tornado has now been repainted in early 50's BR lined green livery and the stovepipe chimney replaced with the more elegant capped version.  The loco is now in the condition that all the A1s ran until the end, except that a more modern version of the British Railways tender crest was applied from the late-50s.

I arrive at the National Railway Museum at 10.30 and the loco had no tender.  This was quickly attached and the loco pushed into the Museum at 11.00 for a formal publicity event on the turntable.  It will be on display all this week before a couple of test runs next week to Scarborough followed by a visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway where it will be in action daily from the 26th - 31st May before returning to the mainline.
