...a few more from NC.

Photos of Southern African Electric Motive Power! Photos should be 800x600 pixels, maximum size 130K. Very good ones will be moved to the Online Gallery, the rest will be pruned away after 14 days to conserve space. If you have photos of FOTR Engines and Stock, please post them in the FOTR Gallery in the Friends of the Rail Forum above.

18-127 looks like its wearing an eye patch! we must have the only toasters in the world with a porta-potty where there should be a window.
Great pics though. Its nice to see electrics now and again. I have always enjoyed them.
Not quite on the rails.

But still a great photo - gritty realism and a slight heat haze.

Great pics Jez. What are those lollipop boom things infront of those 7E's. It reminds me of formula one. Does it have "first gear" written on the front.

You are right Stefan - they DO look like they are from F1 (I'm a MotoGP man, myself!). I seem to recall they were moveable stop boards. Whether a small sign would stop many thousands of KGs of 7E is another thing...!
I will post a few more soon.

A question.. I noticed that the roofs and top fronts of these locos are pretty grotty, and in the post about Pantographs somebody mentioned lubrication, could this grime be coming from the pantographs? and how do you lubricate a pantograph anyway?
Not quite on the rails.

Interesting stuff. Looks like the blue colour schem is also not the most durable, perhaps a black roof line may be the answer to the grottiness observed in the phots. I believe the pantographs are grease lubricated but when and by whom or how, not sure.

Interesting Question, Derek. I drove 25kv electric locos in the UK until fairly recently, and did not give lubrication a second thought. I wonder if this item of equipment has anything to do with it. It puts me in mind of an updated Wickham troley, but the name is unusual...

Hmm.. now that pic should go with the pic of the other pantograph testing machine. Mods, how about duplicating this pic in the thread about these machines? Despite the name I dont quite see these hurtling up and down the country with a pot of grease in hand. Still, its a fascinating vehincle, cross between a double decker bus, EMU and ambulance. Thanks for the pic Jez.

a lot of that grit would be copper dust from the rubbing along the copper cable.

On this topic I posted a picture from overhead, does not appear to be any lubication

Probably got some little fellow with a broom handle and grease bucket, sitting in the roof structure, applying the lubrication at speed!
