18-405 and 18-406
Spotted these 2 in Germiston today, I like the purple but these were seriously dirty loco's. They were attached to a paused Shosh Meyl heading towards Germiston en route for Johannesburg.
Not quite on the rails.

A little water and a mop would make such a good impression on vistors to SA - especially at this time of year, and during the World cup...

I think the purple doesn't look as bad when dirty as some of the earlier orange and blue liveries. Or at least that's how it appears in photos - not sure how the real thing measures up.

What I cant understand is how they get that dirty in the first place, some of the old SAR locos were faded and a bit tatty but I never saw one that looked like it had been in a mud fight with a lot of children. The orange livery was a really stupid idea in the first place.

As Jez said , a simple wash would do the trick. I remember our 6E1's from the past would shine. I am sure they used to polish them.

Add 18-402 and 18-410 to the list of seed planting experiments. I went out and took this photo soon after I read this post. You clearly see here the difference of the purple next to the orange.
