Last ever Midlands Meanderer 21 March 2010

Post by John Ashworth »

"THE MIDLANDS MEANDERER"

Possibly the last ever Umgeni Steam Railway train from Pietermaritzburg to Nottingham Road is going to be held on Sunday 21st March.

After this train, Transnet Freight Rail will put the price of the loco, that we have to hire to pull the train, to such a level that we cannot afford to run the train !!!

We have been running this train as a regular excursion for many many years now and so it will be sadly missed - unless Transnet are more realistic with their charges to us. Book now to avoid disappointment.

Best Regards

Andy

Questions: Umgeni Steam, but I don't see steam in the photos?
PMB to Nottingham Road - How far is that? Time? Distance?
I assume it's round trip? ie returns to PMB?
ETA back at PMB?
Has anyone done this? Comments please.

The Maritzburg Notties trip has to be electric or diesel hauled due to the present ban for steam on the main line. There is also the 6km long Cedara tunnel to negotiate on this route, which for obvious reason is too long for steam.

The trip is aproximately 1:30hrs each way. Buffet lunch is available at Nottingham Road Hotel or at one of the nearby restaurants.
