Past Trains: Withdrawn GM Garrats

Post by John Ashworth »

Nathan wrote:Following sequence of photographs show the withdrawn class GM garrats staged
at the head shunt east end of Capital Park yard, in the shunt area known as
South Yard. The locomotives had been used for a short while to Pietersburg
but were not popular and this was to be their last resting place. Some were
sold into industrial service.

The 15CA in the background is busy with the South Yard shunt, whilst the withdrawn GM garrats can only wish they had some usefulness

The square ends of the GM made it look quite stubby. They were apparently equal in power to two class 19D, were mechanical fired but had two hydrostatic lubricators as per regular locomotives. Note the guards van in the background

The mechanical stoker worm gear in the coal trough inside the tender. This would turn and draw the coals forward toward the firebox, breaking it into smaller pieces before being delivered onto the distribution table in the firebox

An arty view through the smashed cab side window of the GM garratt makes a nice frame for the 15CA at work on the South Yard shunt nearby
