Viewed from inside the 15F firebox, the confusing mess of loose firegrates await fitting, but first the various open spaces in the ashpan must be closed to avoide live coals falling out.

The metal strip welded in place inside the firebox onto the ashpan, will ensure there is no chance of a live coal exiting and causing a fire risk. This view is taken from under the grates, looking towards the tubeplate, whilst standing in the ashpan!

The metal strip to prevent any live coals from accidently exiting the firebox, has been welded in place by John Dadford. The ashpan has been checked for such possible danger areas and closed up. Viewed here in 15F 3117's firebox looking up from under the grates.

Firebars coupled up for the first time and ready for a test. This 15F 3117 is a hand shaker locomotive and thus various sections of the grates can be shaken to clear the fire of clinkers. Most locomotives are steam shakers.

Success, a beautiful gap revealed, as the firebars open correctly. Soon live coals will be shaken up on this bed.
