The sealing up of 15F 3117 ashpan. The view here is the cab end of the firebox looking down on to where the hand shaker pull rods are fitted. The open spaces of the ashpan have now been closed to prevent stray coals causing lineside fires, whilst the angled plates are fitted over the pull
rods to prevent build up of ash. The pitch in the plates will let the ash fall away.

Protective plating fitted over the hand shaker pull rod tunnels, to prevent live coals, when cleaning fire, from falling on and distorting the rods over a long period of time. The coals will now fall away into the ashpan. The rear section is the sealing up of the ashpan to prevent live coals from
falling out and causing lineside fires. The view here is at the cab end and looking downwards.

Ever curious Cliff Petzer, looks into the firebox to add comment to the work in progress.
