The Bogie Man and the Rail Gauge

Post by Steve Appleton »

The Bogie Man and the Rail Gauge.
An article on thbe issues relating to the South African 1065mm rail gauge and the man who made high speeds possible on that gauge, Dr Herbert Sheffel. The author is not credited but I assume this is by Peter Ball.
The story is on The Heritage Portal at http://www.heritageportal.co.za/article ... rail-gauge.
Present day Southern Africa has inherited its railway gauge from a bygone era of 142 years ago, when in 1873 the decision was made to reduce the gauge from 4’-8½” to 3’-6”, when the Cape Government Railways (CGR) planned its extension from Wellington to Worcester.
