Kowie Railway: Centenary Celebrations 1984

Post by Steve Appleton »

Looking back at the Centenary Celebrations of the opening of the railway between Port Alfred and Grahamstown.
Towards the end of last week we received word that Andrew Whitfield MP will continue to push the Public Enterprises Minister to provide clarity on the future of the Grahamstown Railway Station. The following article describing the celebration of the centenary of the opening of the Port Alfred to Grahamstown Railway would add some excitement to the vision. The article was written by Bruce Brinkman and appeared in the November - December 1984 edition of S.A. Rail. Enjoy...
That was when one could run a train through to Grahamstown and on down to Port Alfred. And the station building at Grahamstown was still intact and operational! Unlikely ever to be repeated.
You can read this fascinating, now historical article at http://www.heritageportal.co.za/article ... rahamstown.
"To train or not to train, that is the question"
