They had developed a sudden longing to write down the numbers of all our vehicles.

Several years ago I remember a Spoornet official would occasionally wander into our site while we were waiting to depart and write down our vehicle numbers, but it didn't happen regularly and I don't recall it happening at all for years. Maybe TFR is getting back into the habit? Occasionally CTC ask us how many vehicles we're hauling, but they apparently only need the length of the train, not individual vehicle details.

We keep our own vehicle list as part of the guard's documentation. In the past we have been audited several times by Spoornet. Either Spoornet's Steam Curator or the local Section Manager would pitch up unannounced, sometimes with a check list, and examine all our documentation, as well as detonators, etc. We keep all the documentation on file in case TFR or RSR or anyone want to examine it later.

No - they were working. Rushed up from the distance and waited for the train, and then rushed off again into the distance after it left.

One steam locomotive - check.
One black water tanker - check.
One red coach - check
...

Fascinating!

Incidentally, are the numbers of the coaches clearly visibile?

If you know where to look for them! They are painted on each buffer beam, and on the underframe in the centre of each side.
