4E No 258

Post by Stefan Andrzejewski »

Paging through the photos in this section, I noticed that there are none of the older Electrics. I dug out and scanned these photos I took in 1986 of 4 E 258 on a special to Klein Plaasie. She had been reconditioned and this was her first outing thereafter. Unfortunately they did not use her much after that. Spier used her once or twice, and she now sits at Bellville Depot half vandelised.

Lovely pictures!

A wonderful looking engine, with that delightful steamlined headlight!

I saw her last month and she is probably restorable. In fact those Kleinplasie trips could well work again.

Perhaps someone is keen to form a vintage diesel and electric loco group down here in the Cape?

Isnt there one of those at Millsite? There are 3 electric locos in the compound and one may be a 4E (E219)? Unfortunately she is not easy to photograph and possibly somebody else can confirm or deny it.
Not quite on the rails.

Dylan, I wish I had the Financial means to do something like that. Like a mini Rovos.

Derek!

Yes there are three electric locomotives within the compound at Millsite. They are a 1E, a 3E and a ES. Unfortunately all three are in a horrible state.

I feel that the WC group/s should some how try to rescue all the modern hertiage locos (electric & diesels) that are based all around the WC province, into one very secure area!

The hertiage electric loco's at Millsite can't be touch until such time as the paperwork with HRASA has been completed, and there after it would probably take a few weeks before these loco would appear if the Millsite compound is ever shunted!

On another note, I'm a proud owner of a Class 4E electric number plate. I'll take a pic of it and add it to this forum string!

SAR CLASS 4E - No 254 Brass Oval Plate

The plate is much thicker than, and heavier than a standard brass steam plate

That must weigh a few kg's. Dont let the scrap metal dealers see that. Any pics of the loco it came from?

Perhaps the forum should have a separate section for photos of plates. I am sure with all the members there must be hundreds. Nathan must have a large collection. I have the mighty sum of three.
