FOTR has been setting new standards for non-destructive testing of steam locomotives using ultrasound and other modern techniques. FOTR member Brian Dadford has been carrying out this work (see http://www.friendsoftherail.com/phpBB2/ ... highlight= for more techincal details)
Recently Brian has been testing inside the smokebox of 3117.
The white areas are the bits being tested.

- Suspect area of tube in smokebox end of 15F 3117. The white area is the ultrasonic treated portion of the tubeplate which will show up any flaws, cracks etc.

- Brian Dadford sets his probe on the front tubeplate in the smokebox of 15F 3117. The firebox end has been completed as has most of the locomotive with ultrasonic testing.
