Late afternoon at the site. The 19D will spend the night here before heading off to Germiston to collect the GMAM garratt. The TFR shunting yard is quiet with the diesel shunt locomotives shut down. Silence. Soft sunlight and beautiful green grass. Tranquility on track!

The complex railway layout of Pretoria main station, with the Gautrain development, can be clearly seen here. The construction work on the right is the Gautrain terminal for the Johannesburg and Hatfield sections. The former NZASM shed has been incorporated into the terminal station and the passenger parking area has been extensively developed. Gone is the former carriage shunting yard of Platform 1

Viewed from the steps of the UNISA building in Pretoria, the complex arrangements of railway bridges past and present, can be clearly seen. The far left abutment just visible in the overgrowth, is the original NZASM alignment. Alongside is the current TFR /Metro line to the East, while on its right is the Gautrain route to Hatfield. The far background bridge is Gautrain Pretoria to Johannesburg link.

The City of Pretoria with, its railway infrastructure, makes an interesting vista. The foreground behind the brick building one can see the Friends of the Rail steam hauled train heading out towards the main line to Germiston. The Gautrain development can be clearly seen and the associated railway décor. Viewed with a telephoto lens from the UNISA campus building.

The Gautrain line can be clearly seen here, as the smoke from the 19D locomotive en route to Johannesburg, outlines the TFR / Metro route of their main line. One can see the gradients facing the Gautrain on its Pretoria to Johannesburg route. The road in the background is the feed from Fountains circle to the Ben Schoeman highway. Pictured from the UNISA campus building.
